Abstract
Background : Since 2003, Epilia has provided online personalized consultations for patients with epilepsy and their families.

Methods : More than 5,000 questions from the past 19 years were reviewed and analyzed to investigate the needs of patients with epilepsy.

Results : Overall, families asked more questions than patients themselves, especially for patients under 20 years old or in patients over 60 years old. Patients in their 20s to 40s, in contrast, asked more questions than their families. The most frequently asked question type throughout the entire period was about antiseizure medication (ASM) administration, followed by ASM adverse events, sleep disorders, epilepsy surgery, and menstruation/pregnancy/lactation. Questions regarding epilepsy surgery and herbal medicines/red ginseng tended to decrease over the years. Questions regarding ASM adverse events, stress, sleep disorders, mood disorders/anxiety disorders, and nutritional supplements have increased over the years. In 2021, questions about vaccination reached their peak, which can probably be attributed to the introduction of coronavirus disease 2019 vaccinations.

Conclusions : This study revealed significant unmet needs among patients with epilepsy and their families, indicating a lack of individualized consultations outside clinics. Ongoing efforts are essential to furnish these individuals with the necessary information to manage epilepsy in their daily lives effectively.
